The Regulars...

August 16, 2016

We opened our doors for the first time in 1993, twenty three years ago. And in that time we have had the incredible privilege of being a part of this amazing community that we call home. We have baked and iced thousands of cakes, countless orange rolls and danish, and striven every day to bake people happy. Today we’d like to take a moment to talk about a very special group of people, our regulars. Every Tuesday morning finds Paul and Mary Lou having coffee, a bear claw for Paul and a wheat roll for Mary Lou.  Dick and Susan stop by a couple times a week for palmiers and what Dick likes to call “the worst cup of coffee”, but he can’t help but smile while he’s giving the barista a hard time. There’s Marjorie who used to come in every week with her husband, but since his passing comes in every couple of weeks to stock up on blueberry danish and cream horns. Jennifer loves our Florentine cookies sandwiched with fresh buttercream. We have brides who come in and order cakes because their parents and siblings bought their cakes here. These people and so many more are the very best part of what we do.  We’d just like to take a moment and say thank you. Thank you for coming in and letting us be a part of your lives, thank you for the gift of being a part of yours.

Last week we suffered a loss to our Pastry and More family, our wonderful Paul passed away. He was an incredible human being. A Navy veteran of World War II and a smoke jumper for 30 years, Paul was always ready with a smile and just the kindest person you’d ever meet. Our head baker Bill remembers with a smile, “Their kids used to send them Starbucks gift cards but they liked my pastries better. So they’d go and use their gift cards to buy coffee and then come over here to eat pastry and sit and visit. After a while they finally told the kids to just stop sending the gift cards, that they’d just get their coffee here from now on.” That was 22 years ago. This year we celebrated Paul’s 90th birthday with him and this morning, just like every Tuesday, Mary Lou was here for hugs and conversation and coffee.

So thank you for the years of memories, the cakes and rolls and conversations. Thank you for letting us be a part of your family, thank you for being a part of ours. And Paul: thank you for your service, for the war stories and the apple danish and the bear claws. Thank you for all the memories and here’s to baking up even more.
